Christmas 2014 & update

DEAR FRIENDS OF CASA MILAGRO!

BEST WISHES FOR THE YEAR 2015! WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE  22nd YEAR  FULL OF NEW ADVENTURES, FRUITFUL AND RICH! THE MOST EXCITING NEWS WAS AND IS THE NEW CONTACT TO ESCUELA CARACOL, A RUDOLPH STEINER-WALDORF SCHOOL IN S.MARCOS LA LAGUNA, HERE AT LAKE ATITLAN.

ESCUELA CARACOL IS A WONDERFUL APPROACH TO REACH LOCAL FAMILIES AND THEIR CHILDREN AS WELL AS FOREIGNERS. THEY EXIST ALREADY FOR 7 YEARS, STARTED WITH JUST 5 CHILDREN, NOW IT IS ABOUT 60. OUR IMPRESSION IS THAT OF A GARDEN IN WHICH LEARNING AND TEACHING AND COMMUNITY TAKES PLACE. IT IS AN ENVIRONMENT OF JOY AND WARMTH AND SUPPORT FOR ALL.

IMG_1053

WE STARTET TO SEND JUST FOUR CHILDREN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, IT IS A LOT OF WORK, THEY HAVE TO BE BROUGHT OVER BY ONE ADULT EACH MORNING (THILDA DOES THE FRIDAYS AND STAYS FOR LEARNING) AND TO BE PICKED UP AGAIN IN THE AFTERNOON. SURPRISINGLY WELL IT ALL WENT, BUT EXPENSIVE FOR US AS A TINY PROJECT. THE CHILDREN HAVE SCHOLARSHIP, FAMILIES JUST PAY A SHARE FOR THE GREAT TWO MEALS A DAY. WE  ALREADY SEE WONDROUS CHANGES HAPPENING AND ARE VERY GRATEFUL AND WANT TO CONTINUE WITH MORE CHILDREN. HOPING FOR YOUR HELP FOR THE EXPENSIVE BOAT RIDES, ABOUT 200 Q (25$) A MONTH PER CHILD.

ANOTHER SURPRISE AND BLESSING IS THAT WE WILL BE THE ONE-YEAR-PROJECT- 2015 OF THE GERMAN LUTHERAN CHURCH IN GUATEMALA-CITY.

WE ARE ALREADY MAKING PLANS FOR RENOVATIONS, IMPROVEMENTS, ETC. AN ANEXO BUILDING AND FOR SURE A PLAYGROUND UNIT AND GARDEN FOR THE CHILDREN AND THEIR MOTHERS. AND WE HOPE TO TRAIN A YOUNG WOMEN TO BECOME A WALDORF-KINDERGARDEN-TEACHER FOR THE VERY YOUNG ONES  WE CAN’T SEND TO S.MARCOS BUT PREPARE FOR THEIR 1st GRADE AT CARACOL.

IMG_1066PLEASE! IF ANYBODY WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER WITH IDEAS OR EVEN WITH THEIR HANDS TO BUILD THE PLAYGROUND, WE WILL BE SUPER GRATEFUL! ALSO, IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCES WITH GOOD STORES FOR CHILDREN’S LEARNING MATERIAL AND ALL AROUND THAT, LET US KNOW!

AS USUAL WE HAD A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS EVENT, HERE ARE SOME IMPRESSIONS. OUR WISH-LIST FOR 2015…..MORE VOLUNTEERS, SPONSORSHIPS FOR SENIORS (WE CONTINUE THE PROGRAM FOR SENIOR WIDOWS AND VERY OLD COUPLES) AND CHILDREN, HELP WITH OUR BUILDING AND GARDENING, USED BOOKS, MATERIAL, CLOTH FOR CHILDREN AND WHATEVER YOU COULD IMAGINE WOULD BE GOOD FOR US!   THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!

Christmas 2012 at Casa Milagro

Dear Friends of ¨Casa Milagro¨!!!

Many loving wishes to you for the New Year!!!

After the big ¨High¨of the end of the Mayan Calendar at the 21. We are back to normal so to speak. There were many celebrations for this shift in almost all villages around the lake, and in historical sites like Tikal etc.

Our Christmas events were another highlight for us, celebrating not only with the traditional tree and stars, tamales, all kinds of sweets – but also looking back to 20 years (in August) of many different activities, like all kinds of workshops for children, counseling about family planning, hygiene, dental care, hospital, alphabetization for mothers, house building and house remodeling for seniors, meals and food deliveries for seniors, help with retire mental plan etc.

Reflecting on all that we can let go easier of painful experiences, for instance this year we had the loss of a great friend for so many years, Aria Rose in California. Aria was actually a health practitioner, but was very much engaged in the sale of our handicrafts; wherever she went she took her basket with her and talked to people about us. That was Miracle in Action!!! Beside the pain of losing a friend I am so very grateful!!!

Aria also left a gap in our financial base, we have to find more new friends to help us continuing the good work and also keeping our independence from ¨just donations by selling our items! Please, contact me to get more information, it doesn´t have to be a big approach, it can be a onetime sale at home with family members or neighbors etc.

We also like to invite you to support our old and very needy senior widows, by starting a partnership with only 35 $ a month, this is all it takes to cover all basic expanses – please visit our website!

FINALLY I LIKE TO THANK ALL FRIENDS NEAR AND FAR FOR THEIR SUPPORT! PLEASE, RECEIVE OUR DEEPEST GRATITUDE FOR YOUR HELP! WE ARE VERY HOPEFUL THAT WE CAN CONTINUE AND MAYBE EVEN IMPROVE OUR PROGRAM, HELPING MORE WIDOWS IN NEARBY VILLAGES ETC.

AND ALL BEST WISHES FOR THE NEW YEAR, MAY IT BE FRUITFUL, MAY THEIR BE WAYS TO BE CREATIVE AND STRONG TO LIVE OUR DREAMS! MAY THERE BE MIRACLES!!!
Yours, Thilda and the ¨Miracle House¨!!!

Health

Guatemala is facing about 1 Million malnourished and people – mostly children – under weight.
It certainly hits in S.Cruz the poorest of the community.
In contact with the local physicians at the health clinic – Puesto de Salud – we give nutritious meals to mothers and children of our program.
Mothers also learn how to prepare a simple, cheap, but valuable meal for their little ones and babies.
We talk about pregnancy, breastfeeding, vitamins, and the need of family planing.

Casa Milagro

Santa Cruz is a small village in the highlands of Guatemala situated at the so called “most beautiful lake of the world”, lago de Atitlan.

People live from agriculture and also tourism which has decreased drastically because of environmental problems, issues of safety and the overall malaise of the global economy.

Although education and chances for income are improving around the lake and in Santa Cruz, there are still many families and single parents who don’t have access to the resources and  they need support.

In addition, Santa Cruz is one of the most difficult villages to access. to get to other villages, markets, hospitals etc., the only transportation is by boat. This adds to the complication and expense of the simplest functions that many of the other villages take for granted.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

“Our History”

In 1992, German social worker Thilda Zorn, who had been coming to Guatemala since 1985, organized a group of 7 women to educate and provide information about nutrition, health, hygiene and family planning to the community.

At that time women had about 10 to 14 pregnancies and about 5 to 8 children that survived .today families have 2 to 5 children! in 1992 only 40 children joined the official school – today its enrolment is over 500 !
