First Volunteer in 2017 ;)

I had a pleasant time at Casa Milagro working with the local kids.

Especially teaching Miguel, how he teaches foreigners the Spanish language. It was a really good practice for his English and for my Spanish.

Thank’s to Thilda and the kids, who made this stay so enjoyable.

CHRISTMAS 2016

DEAR FRIENDS OF “CASA MILAGRO”

WE HOPE YOU HAD PLEASANT CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS AND CONTINUE WITH HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
I am sending you some lovely impressions of our Christmas-gathering, singing and feasting with the traditional “Tamales” and many cakes. And certainly presents for everyone!
Here is a review of our YEAR 2016:
Pastor Markus of the Lutheran Church in Guatemala City came for a first blessing of our new KINDERGARDEN  in May. Though it wasnot really completed but it already made a beautiful impression. The vocational Center CECAP here in S.Cruz surprised us with a beautiful window front.
Now we are happy to announce that in January we can say “Welcome!” to Mothers and the first 3 year old children, a nice and gentle beginning of learning and practicing Waldorf-education. We hope for support from “Escuela Caracol” in S.Marcos and other Waldorf teachers in Germany.
Also – we hope for your help to train a young woman here from S.Cruz to become a kindergarden teacher – every little contribution is GREAT and will be very welcomed!
We continue to send children to “Escuela Caracol” in S.Marcos. We must cover the boat rides and other expenses, which cost about $30per month per child. We have best results if we send children by the time they are 3 years old, and especially the “difficult” ones make a lot of progress.
Our student Miguel Alvarez graduated last year at “Escuela Caracol” and learned so much English in only 5 months that he passed the test for 7th grade at an English speaking school in Panajachel. We are so happy for him and his family, and he is very excited to be able to learn and exchange with foreign and local students equally. Please help us also to be able to continue supporting his precious education. Miguel could someday become an advocate for his community!
Our group of elders is now – thanks to their receiving a retirement of $45 a month (we did the paperwork with the government for all of them) – reduced to four, including a very old couple. Don Lucas will reach his 100th birthday soon and we will certainly have a big celebration!

The children at “Casa Milagro” serve the seniors a meal each day – going to their homes, offering the meal and asking what else they might need. That is part of our education – “Taking care, looking after each other” and more.

Many volunteers and practitioners from universities served us during the year with ideas, playful activities, the sales of our precious beaded jewelry. We are grateful to them all!
How can you support us ?
– a monthly donation for a child or widow
– a donation for a yearly dentist appointment for the children
– a sale in your family, community, church etc. to keep us independent from only donations
– a collection of school and art materials for our children that you bring down to Guatemala as a visitor or send to a contact in your country.

– spread the word about us and our needs – so many people are looking for a way of helping directly!

CREATIVE ACTIVITIES

DSCN2884

Our main goal at CasaMilagro is to give  children access to education and a proper nutrition, and a playful, safe environment.   In addition, we want them to develop strong social skills in order to become resilient, self-confident children.

  • We provide nutritious groceries for the families on a weekly base and cook one meal every afternoon for all of the children at the project.
  • We engage and support the children every day by helping them with their homework and by giving extra support to those who need to learn or repeat specific school subjects
  • We teach English in the afternoons, as well as general knowledge, (geography, environmental awareness, etc.) through interactive learning.
  • We seek to bring out CREATIVITY in all of our children.  It is very important to stimulate and open the children`s minds to develop more interest in the arts and to find more self-confidence in themselves.

Below are some of our recent activities:

We ran a photo project in which the kids learned how to use a camera and prepared a small public exhibition. We provide a wide range of creative activities for the children: painting  T-shirts, singing, playing recorders and other musical instruments, sewing clothes for dolls, making necklaces, and performing a short theatre play for the parents in January – just to name a few 🙂

With all these creative activities, and with our support, the children experience what they are already capable of – strength and self-confidence. The activities are a great way to develop social skills because they share knowledge, materials, work space, and interact in a group environment.

Although the children come from strenuous living situations, we can see their positive improvements everyday. We play very important roles in their lives especially for those who don`t have the opportunity to go to the Caracol (Waldorf school)!

We are so happy that we can already provide all of this to our children and thank YOU for your support!

New Year’s greetings

Miguel and his family

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016 !!!
DEAR FRIENDS OF CASA MILAGRO !
We would like to thank you for your continued interest, support and warmth towards all of us of the MILAGRO-FAMILY.
Without you and your help we wouldn’t be able to do what we are doing, for already more than   23 YEARS !
As you may know, we are extremely affected by the financial situation in Europe. It has meant that – already for a whole year – every time we exchange money from Germany we now receive 30 % less than that of previous years.
It is simply unbearable for CASA MILAGRO, but with your support we can get through this crisis.
You may consider helping us by organizing a sale for our beautiful beaded jewelry – with your friends, at your work place, at your school, church etc.
Please, contact us, and we will organize it with you!  casamilagroatitlan@gmail.com
You also might like to sponsor a child attending the Waldorf-School “Escuela Caracol” in S.Marcos la Laguna around the lake, it needs only 1 $ daily each child to make a big difference.
We appreciate you all spreading the word about our work – helping special families in need – single mothers, mothers with many children, senior widows, and very old couples. Furthermore connecting special children, who need loving attention and professional support with a school in a beautiful garden =
ESCUELA CARACOL WALDORF. Your sponsorship allows the boat ride and the school fee.
In the meantime we have our first 6. grade graduate from Waldorf. His name is M i g u e l, and we are so happy for him and his family, and we are pleased to announce that he already has a place to continue studying in an English teaching school.
Miguel is just 12 years old, but shows promise beyond his years – we hope for your generous support that allows him to study for the next few years and prepare for University.
PLEASE! We invite you to donate just ONE DOLLAR A DAY for Miguel’s education – what a change it will make in his life and the life of his family!
The senior widows of Casa Milagro are incredible appreciative for your sponsorships. We are supporting them with monthly food supplies and include them in our festivities of Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day etc. We also help them to organize for their legal paperwork to receive a retirement of 400 Q (50 $) a month.
With delight we also like to announce the new project of a  WALDORF-KINDERGARDEN!  Thank’s to the Iglesia Luterana Alemana in Guatemala-City we are able to build this new unit for the smallest children who than might go to S. Marcos to join  “Escuela Caracol”.  We are still looking for Waldorf-teachers to share their experiences with us and give us training. We also need to find a young woman in the village or around  interested in this education.
Our many activities over the year were strongly supported by volunteers and practitioners of Universities in Germany and Switzerland. We are so very grateful to receive those young people with their enthusiasm, interest and strong involvement.
LET ME FINISH WITH BEST WISHES FOR THE NEW YEAR – PLEASE, HELP  US   EVEN  MORE TO CONTINUE OUR GOOD WORK !
YOURS, THILDA  AND ALL MOTHERS AND CHILDREN OF
                         CASA  MILAGRO

New volunteers arrived!

Hello there!
New volounteers arrived at Casa Milagro! We are Angi (22) from Switzerland and Hanna (19) and Dani (22) from Germany. Angi and I are studying Social Work, and we do an internship here. Hanna was interested in doing some volunteer work after finishing school. We all are staying for a few months at the Lake and really enjoy to be involved at Casa Milagro.
For example we give some English classes to the children. Also we offer handicrafts and playing music. With the women of Casa Milagro we’re making handicrafts too – lovely little bead work they call mostacillas. We really would like to learn how to do it as terrific as the women. We are trying to help them with writing and maths as well.
We’re looking forward to what comes next because there is always something new to experience here at Casa Milagro!

Christmas 2014 & update

DEAR FRIENDS OF CASA MILAGRO!

BEST WISHES FOR THE YEAR 2015! WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE  22nd YEAR  FULL OF NEW ADVENTURES, FRUITFUL AND RICH! THE MOST EXCITING NEWS WAS AND IS THE NEW CONTACT TO ESCUELA CARACOL, A RUDOLPH STEINER-WALDORF SCHOOL IN S.MARCOS LA LAGUNA, HERE AT LAKE ATITLAN.

IMG_1054

ESCUELA CARACOL IS A WONDERFUL APPROACH TO REACH LOCAL FAMILIES AND THEIR CHILDREN AS WELL AS FOREIGNERS. THEY EXIST ALREADY FOR 7 YEARS, STARTED WITH JUST 5 CHILDREN, NOW IT IS ABOUT 60. OUR IMPRESSION IS THAT OF A GARDEN IN WHICH LEARNING AND TEACHING AND COMMUNITY TAKES PLACE. IT IS AN ENVIRONMENT OF JOY AND WARMTH AND SUPPORT FOR ALL.

IMG_1053

WE STARTET TO SEND JUST FOUR CHILDREN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, IT IS A LOT OF WORK, THEY HAVE TO BE BROUGHT OVER BY ONE ADULT EACH MORNING (THILDA DOES THE FRIDAYS AND STAYS FOR LEARNING) AND TO BE PICKED UP AGAIN IN THE AFTERNOON. SURPRISINGLY WELL IT ALL WENT, BUT EXPENSIVE FOR US AS A TINY PROJECT. THE CHILDREN HAVE SCHOLARSHIP, FAMILIES JUST PAY A SHARE FOR THE GREAT TWO MEALS A DAY. WE  ALREADY SEE WONDROUS CHANGES HAPPENING AND ARE VERY GRATEFUL AND WANT TO CONTINUE WITH MORE CHILDREN. HOPING FOR YOUR HELP FOR THE EXPENSIVE BOAT RIDES, ABOUT 200 Q (25$) A MONTH PER CHILD.

IMG_1058

ANOTHER SURPRISE AND BLESSING IS THAT WE WILL BE THE ONE-YEAR-PROJECT- 2015 OF THE GERMAN LUTHERAN CHURCH IN GUATEMALA-CITY.

IMG_0188

Pastor Markus Boettcher of German Lutheran Church

IMG_1065

WE ARE ALREADY MAKING PLANS FOR RENOVATIONS, IMPROVEMENTS, ETC. AN ANEXO BUILDING AND FOR SURE A PLAYGROUND UNIT AND GARDEN FOR THE CHILDREN AND THEIR MOTHERS. AND WE HOPE TO TRAIN A YOUNG WOMEN TO BECOME A WALDORF-KINDERGARDEN-TEACHER FOR THE VERY YOUNG ONES  WE CAN’T SEND TO S.MARCOS BUT PREPARE FOR THEIR 1st GRADE AT CARACOL.

IMG_1066PLEASE! IF ANYBODY WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER WITH IDEAS OR EVEN WITH THEIR HANDS TO BUILD THE PLAYGROUND, WE WILL BE SUPER GRATEFUL! ALSO, IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCES WITH GOOD STORES FOR CHILDREN’S LEARNING MATERIAL AND ALL AROUND THAT, LET US KNOW!

IMG_1070

AS USUAL WE HAD A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS EVENT, HERE ARE SOME IMPRESSIONS. OUR WISH-LIST FOR 2015…..MORE VOLUNTEERS, SPONSORSHIPS FOR SENIORS (WE CONTINUE THE PROGRAM FOR SENIOR WIDOWS AND VERY OLD COUPLES) AND CHILDREN, HELP WITH OUR BUILDING AND GARDENING, USED BOOKS, MATERIAL, CLOTH FOR CHILDREN AND WHATEVER YOU COULD IMAGINE WOULD BE GOOD FOR US!   THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!
